A Guelph teen faces impaired driving and assault police charges following a traffic stop Wednesday evening.
Approximately 8:20 p.m. police received a report of a vehicle being driven erratically on Ingram Street in the north end. The caller advised there were three young male occupants and the driver crossed into oncoming traffic before mounting a curb. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.
More than an hour later, police received a second call about the same car being driven erratically on Eramosa Road near downtown and were able to conduct a traffic stop.
The driver appeared confused and unsteady on his feet. Officers noted the two passengers were passed out and had difficulty rousing them. Several vaping devices and an open bag of cannabis were found inside the car.
The driver was arrested and transported to the police station, where an officer trained in drug recognition concluded his ability to drive was impaired by drugs. He was transported to hospital for a blood sample to be taken, but refused to comply and twice kicked an officer in the leg. The officer was not injured.
A 17-year-old Guelph boy is charged with impaired driving, refusing to comply with a demand and assault police. He was banned from driving for 90 days and his vehicle was seized for seven days. He will appear in court June 25.
