The Ontario government has announced that $200 rebate cheques will be distributed to residents by late January or early February. The initiative, aimed at providing financial relief, was confirmed on Friday by Colin Blachar, spokesperson for Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy.
“Our government is putting money back into taxpayers’ pockets with a $200 rebate cheque that is expected to land in mailboxes by late January or early February,” Blachar stated. Families will also receive an additional $200 per eligible child under 18 as part of the program.
Who Is Eligible for the Rebates?
The rebate, which is tax-free, will be distributed to all Ontario residents aged 18 and over. Additionally, families who qualify for the federal Canada Child Benefit (CCB) will receive an extra $200 for every child under 18.
Guelph MPP and Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner has criticized the decision to send cheques to all Ontarians.
For families with children not receiving the CCB in 2024, the government has outlined an alternative process to claim the $200 rebate per child.
According to government estimates, 15 million payments will be issued: 12.5 million to adults and 2.5 million for children. Ontarians who were bankrupt or incarcerated in 2024 are not eligible for the rebate.
Premier Doug Ford has framed the rebate cheques as a way to provide financial relief while contrasting his government’s policies with those of opposition parties.
“The difference between our party and the Liberals and NDP is that they believe in one thing: tax the taxpayers to death; drive companies out of this province,” Ford said in October. “We’ve taken a different approach.”
The rebate plan, first reported in October, is part of the government’s broader efforts to alleviate financial pressures on residents and support families during challenging economic times.
