Arrest After Break-In While Homeowner Inside

A Guelph man faces several charges after a south-end home was entered while the owner was home.

Just before 6 p.m. Sunday police were called to a home near Edinburgh Road South and College Avenue West. The homeowner reported he heard some movement in his main-floor unit and then could hear someone downstairs but did not believe it to be his tenant. Officers entered the basement unit and noted a door leading to a patio was open.

Security video showed a male on the property just before 4 p.m. before leaving on foot. He returned approximately 90 minutes later and entered the house through an unlocked front door before making his way to the basement unit. He left a short time later wearing a shirt and hat stolen from the home and carrying several bags.

Officers were able to track the suspect via an Air Tag on a stolen laptop. He was located a short time later and arrested. He initially provided a false name and date of birth but was recognized by an officer from a previous interaction.

A 35-year-old Guelph man is charged with two counts of break and enter, possessing stolen property under $5,000, obstructing police and three counts of possessing identity documents. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.
