Death Threats, Mischief Over Gift Cards

Listen to this article

A dispute over gift cards has led to criminal charges for a Guelph male.

The Guelph Police Service was called Monday morning to a convenience store in the west end. The adult male clerk advised a customer had been upset after purchasing two $150 gift cards and claimed one of them did not work. He became irate, demanding his money back before threatening to kill the clerk.

When the clerk suggested calling the store owner for direction, the customer banged the phone on the counter until it broke. While officers were speaking to the clerk the customer returned to the store and was arrested.

A 53-year-old Guelph male is charged with uttering death threats and mischief under $5,000. He will appear in a Guelph court September 19, 2023.
