Devastating Barn Fire Kills Over 200 Cattle

A devastating barn fire occurred over the weekend in northern Wellington County, resulting in the loss of hundreds of cattle and causing damage estimated between $2-3 million.

The Wellington North Fire Service stated that more than 200 cows perished in the blaze, which took place on Saturday south of Conn. The barn was completely destroyed.

Firefighters were dispatched to the scene near Mount Forest at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday following a report of a barn fire at a rural property.

Upon reaching the location, the first responders observed intense smoke and flames emanating from the building’s second floor.

The structure was a beef barn housing approximately 300 cows. Thankfully, the farm owners were able to evacuate safely, and no injuries were reported among them or the fire crew.

The fire’s origin was determined to be accidental, sparked by hay that had been stored in the barn.

Close to 60 firefighters from various stations, including Arthur, Mount Forest, Clifford, Harriston, Palmerston, Shelburne, Dundalk, and Grand Valley, were present at the incident site.
