Downtown Standoff; Male Climbs Crane

A Guelph man faces charges after climbing to the top of a downtown construction crane Monday evening, prompting a two-hour standoff with police.

Just after 8 p.m. police received a call from an alarm company about someone forcing his way into a construction site on Baker Street. Officers arrived a short time later and observed the male at the top of an eight-storey crane. After more than two hours of negotiation the male climbed down and was arrested.

A 49-year-old Guelph man is charged with break and enter and mischief. He will appear in a Guelph court July 2.
