A 95-year-old driver has pleaded guilty to careless driving causing death following a tragic collision that claimed the life of a 72-year-old pedestrian in Guelph. The incident occurred on September 26 in the parking lot of Shoppers Drug Mart on Eramosa Road.
The victim, Micaela Tsavaris, was struck while walking towards the store entrance as the driver, then 94, was reversing out of a designated disabled parking space. Her husband, 74-year-old Art Tsavaris, sustained minor injuries in the collision.
During proceedings at the Guelph Provincial Offences Court on Wednesday, the accused, who did not attend in person, was handed a five-year driver’s license suspension and a $3,000 fine. His legal representative stated that he accepts responsibility for his actions and does not intend to drive again.
Court heard that the driver was operating a black Chevrolet sedan when he backed into Micaela Tsavaris, who was then dragged by the vehicle. The penalty issued was mutually agreed upon by the Tsavaris family and the accused, bringing a resolution to the case.
