An 80-year-old woman who was severely assaulted in downtown Guelph on Sunday morning has died, police confirmed Monday.
The attack happened around 9:30 a.m. near Wyndham Street North and Macdonell Street. The woman was found unconscious on the sidewalk and taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
A 34-year-old Guelph man was arrested later the same day. He had initially been charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault and appeared in court Monday for a bail hearing. He remains in custody. Police have not confirmed whether the charges will be upgraded following the victim’s death.
Investigators said the suspect fled before officers arrived but was identified and arrested Sunday evening.
