Family Clarifies Robert Munsch’s MAID Decision After Misleading Coverage

Recent headlines suggested beloved children’s author Robert Munsch had only just chosen medical assistance in dying (MAID). That framing left many readers thinking his death was imminent. The reality is quite different.

In a profile by The New York Times Magazine, Munsch reaffirmed a decision he made years ago, not something new this week.

After those stories circulated, Munsch’s daughter, Julie, publicly clarified that her father is not dying and that his choice to pursue MAID was made about five years ago and discussed publicly back in 2021. Her message, posted on Facebook, directly addressed the alarm caused by poor selective reporting.

Munsch, 80, lives with dementia and Parkinson’s. He explained that approval for MAID is in place and that he would only consider using it if and when communication becomes too difficult – stressing that the timing would be his choice, and only while he still has capacity to consent.

Despite these health challenges, Munsch has remained active. He continues to appear at community storytelling events in Guelph and even managed to produce a late-career book, Bounce!, drafted in 2023 and published in 2024.

When reporting leaves out context, families are forced to correct the record. In this case, Julie Munsch had to reassure readers that her father is not at death’s door and that his MAID decision was neither recent nor hidden. The real story is that Robert Munsch – author of The Paper Bag Princess and Love You Forever – continues to live with dignity, share his stories, and remain connected with the community he has inspired for decades.
