Fire at Tent Settlement Near York and Watson Roads Deemed Suspicious
Authorities were called to address two fires at a tent settlement close to the intersection of York Road and Watson Road North on Wednesday afternoon.
Guelph Fire Department’s Deputy Chief Steve Goode reported that 22 firefighters were dispatched to two distinct fires at a tent community in the forest at around 2 p.m. Upon arrival, both structures were already fully ablaze. Caught in Guelph (and Area) member Mike Young captured a photo of the incident with the encampment nearby.
George Joseph Lehman first posted of the incident to the group.
While the structures were entirely consumed by the fire, no one was injured, and the fire was restricted to the immediate area, Goode added.
Due to the location being in a wooded field, a four-wheeler equipped with a water tank was utilized to shuttle water to and from a nearby hydrant.
Guelph Police are presently at the site, collaborating with the Guelph Fire Department in an ongoing investigation. They are seeking any witnesses to the event or residents of the tent community for further information.
