Guelph Police Media Release – May 10, 2023

Distraction Theft

On May 8th, 2023, at 12:20pm, an elderly female victim was walking in a residential neighbourhood located near the intersection of Imperial Road South and Wellington Street West in the City of Guelph.

A black sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a male in his 50’s, with a female with shoulder length gray hair in the front passenger seat, pulled over to ask for directions to a pharmacy.

The male then offered the victim a necklace, putting it around her neck.

After the SUV drove away, the victim realized that the male had taken the necklace she was wearing, leaving her only with the fake gold necklace he had just given her.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to be mindful of the ongoing issue of distractions thefts in our community and to always be cautious when interacting with someone that you don’t know.

No Licence Plate Leads To Arrest

On May 9th, 2023, at 3:20pm, police observed a motor vehicle driving near the intersection of Victoria Road North and Eramosa Road in the City of Guelph, with a trailer that didn’t have a licence plate.

A traffic stop was initiated, and after observing that the trailer was full of rust and in poor mechanical condition, the vehicle and trailer were moved to a nearby parking lot to assess the mechanical fitness of the trailer.

After speaking with the driver further, a demand was made for him to provide a roadside breath test.

At 3:45pm, the driver registered a fail on an Approved Screening Device and was subsequently arrested.

A 50-year-old Innisfil male has been charged with:
-Operation While Impaired – Blood Alcohol Concentration
-Fail To Display Device (Annual Inspection) x2
-Improper Means Of Attachment
-Draw Trailer – No Plate

His driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and his vehicle was impounded for seven days.

He will appear in court on May 23rd.

Recovered Stolen Vehicle

On May 9th, 2023, at 11:23am, police located an unoccupied black 2012 BMW X3 parked in a residential parking lot located near the intersection of Waterloo Avenue and Edinburgh Road South in the City of Guelph.

The motor vehicle had been reported stolen on May 8th.

The vehicle was found to have extensive damage to both sides with denting and scratches, a ripped off rear-view mirror, and cracks to the windshield.

Vehicle Fails To Stop

On May 10th, 2023, just before 3:15am, police observed a black Ford 500 motor vehicle driving near the intersection of Silvercreek Parkway North and Woodlawn Road West in the City of Guelph, with licence plates not registered to the vehicle.

Police attempted to initiate a traffic stop, however the vehicle failed to stop and continued to increase its speed.

A pursuit was not initiated due to a concern for public safety.

Motor Vehicle Entry

Some time overnight on May 8th, 2023, a motor vehicle parked in a residential parking lot located near the intersection of Woodlawn Road East and Woolwich Street in the City of Guelph was entered. Entry was gained as the front passenger window was smashed. Two pairs of sunglasses were taken.
