Guelph Teen Arrested After School Shooting Threat

A concerning set of messages shared between students prompted a rapid police response in Guelph. Authorities say the situation was contained, but the incident is being treated with full seriousness.

A Guelph boy was arrested Tuesday night after police became aware of threats against a local school.

Approximately 7:45 p.m. police learned a student had sent messages to friends that he wanted to buy a gun and “shoot up the school.”

Police were able to identify the subject with assistance from school board officials. Just before 10 p.m. a 15-year-old Guelph boy was arrested for uttering threats. He will appear in court in June.

There is no evidence the boy had a weapon or that any threat to the school existed.

The Guelph Police Service recognizes the importance of school safety and how threats of this nature can be difficult for students, staff, and their families. Police take incidents like this extremely seriously and will continue to work closely with school boards to help identify the individuals responsible and lay the appropriate criminal charges when a suspect is identified.
