Guelph city council has approved the development of a new Princess Auto location in the city, clearing the way for a 30,000 sq. ft. retail facility expected to bring approximately 55 new jobs. The proposal passed with a decisive 11-1 vote—the lone opposing vote coming from Ward 2 resident Erin Caton.
The project, planned for the southeast corner of Woodlawn Road and Royal Road, includes a single-storey commercial building, 140 parking spaces, and will occupy 2.1 hectares (about 3 acres) of land. It’s expected to serve tradespeople, farmers, mechanics, and contractors—core customers of the Canadian industrial supply retailer.
City staff had recommended rejecting the proposal, citing provincial policies tied to employment land use. However, council voted overwhelmingly to move forward, emphasizing the economic and employment benefits for the city.
Mayor Cam Guthrie praised the decision, describing it as a clear message that Guelph supports new investment, particularly from Canadian businesses like Princess Auto. “We want new jobs here,” Guthrie stated, noting the significance of a national company committing millions of dollars to the local economy.
The vote may raise questions for some residents, given that Ward 2 resident Erin Caton stood alone in opposing the development—a project tied directly to job creation and industrial-commercial synergy in Guelph’s north end.
Planning documents describe the site as a good fit for the retailer’s operations and note that personal and household sales typically make up just 25-30% of business, ensuring the store remains aligned with the industrial character of the area. The remaining portion of the land is reserved for future industrial development.
Princess Auto, based in Winnipeg, currently operates over 55 locations across Canada. The new Guelph store will mark a convenient option for local customers who would otherwise need to travel to Kitchener for the nearest location.
With council’s approval now granted, the project is set to move forward.
