Impaired Driver Involved in Collision had Child in Vehicle

A Guelph man was arrested for impaired driving after he was involved in a collision Tuesday afternoon with his four-year-old niece in the vehicle.

Just before 3 p.m. police were called to Willow Road and Ferman Drive. Investigation revealed a Jeep Cherokee made a wide turn, hitting another vehicle head-on. The elderly driver of the second vehicle was assessed by paramedics but did not seek further medical treatment.

Officers spoke to the driver of the Cherokee and noted he had alcohol on his breath and was unsteady on his feet. He was arrested and transported to the police station, where further tests revealed he had more than twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 30-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court June 7.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to always consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
