Large Encampment Fire at Hanlon and Speedvale

Residents and passersby near the Hanlon Expressway and Speedvale Ave West experienced concern following reports of a large explosion around 9:30pm, leading to multiple emergency calls. Authorities, including the police and fire department, promptly arrived at a homeless encampment behind Food Basics where a significant fire had erupted.

Christine Stein Carreon first posted to the Caught in Guelph (and Area) community “Omg. We heard a huge bang outside. Our house backs onto the Hanlon between Speedvale and Willow. Lots of smoke and flames from the Hanlon area. Gawd I hope everyone is safe.”

Several other members were in the area, along with Mehria Sultani who commented “”Fire around 9:30 as I was heading home on hanlon I saw the fire and called the fire department. It is behind food basics plaza and heard loud bang couple times. Sounded more like propane tank explosion. Hope everyone is safe, it was the encampment area where they had a lot of pallets.”

Efforts were underway to manage the situation, with emergency services working to control the fire and ensure the area’s safety. The quick response underscored the importance of community vigilance and the effectiveness of local emergency services in addressing such incidents. No word yet if there are any injuries and this story will be updated as more information becomes available.
