A new business is emerging in Guelph, and it’s planning on making some Waves!
Making Waves Swim School will unveil its fifth location at 104 Cooper Drive in Guelph this coming October.
“Guelph is special to us; it’s where my wife and I met, so we are thrilled to expand here,” shared Making Waves’ creator Tiernan Murphy. “Our pool is custom-built to meet our exact requirements, designed to offer a secure and engaging space where kids of various ages and abilities can improve their swimming skills while enjoying themselves. We are on schedule for our opening classes in October,” he continued.
Murphy expressed excitement that Making Waves is a certified B-Corp, indicating it meets stringent standards of social and environmental responsibility, openness, and lawful responsibility, harmonizing profits and purpose.
As a Trusted Caught in Guelph (and Area) Community Sponsor, Making Waves Swim School have been well received by the Guelph community.
“Joining the global network of businesses using their influence positively, Making Waves aims to help mold a future where success isn’t measured solely by profit but by the constructive change we contribute to the world,” Murphy stated.

Making Waves has committed resources to achieve different environmental and social objectives, detailed on their website. Beyond that, Making Waves guarantees top-notch swim instruction for children.
“Our success stems from small classes, skilled teachers, and warm water,” Murphy explained. “Our goal is to instruct kids on safety in the water, ensuring they are safe and have fun. Our coaches, being solely dedicated to teaching, are some of the best, truly committed to your children’s learning.”
Founded in 1994 in his parents’ backyard pool, Murphy’s Making Waves has grown steadily. “I began with friends’ children, and word spread organically. Post-university, I expanded to hotel pools, and by the early 2000s, we constructed pools specifically for our coaching methods. We now instruct around 7000 children weekly,” he recounted.

Many of the Guelph location’s coaches are regular Making Waves staff studying at Guelph universities. “We’ve transferred several coaches and will hire and train locals from Guelph too,” Murphy noted.
Offering classes for everyone from two months (with parents) to adults and lifeguarding courses, Making Waves stands as a premier choice for swim programs. Visit www.mwss.ca to register for fall classes beginning October 10th in Guelph.
