Male Arrested After Hate-motivated Assault

Listen to this article

A Georgetown male was arrested following what police believe was a hate-motivated assault in downtown Guelph Saturday morning.

Just after 3 a.m. two males were involved in a heated verbal altercation at Wyndham Street North and Douglas Street. A passerby attempted to intervene and deescalate the males.

One of the males began recording the passerby – who is a member of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community – while yelling homophobic slurs, before slapping the victim across the cheek.

The male’s friend apologized to the victim, but the male continued yelling slurs and spat towards the victim, who was not physically injured.

A male was located in the area and arrested. A 22-year-old Georgetown male is charged with assault. He will appear in a Guelph court July 21, 2023.
