Listen to this article

A Guelph male was arrested Tuesday evening in relation to a series of commercial and residential break-ins in the downtown area.

Early Tuesday, entries were reported to two businesses near Wyndham Street South and Surrey Street East. A quantity of cash and products were stolen. While investigating those incidents, officers learned three other commercial buildings in the area had sustained damage overnight in failed attempts to gain entry.

Members of the Guelph Police Service Break Enter Auto Theft (BEAT) Unit identified a person of interest, who was arrested Tuesday evening as he left a downtown address. A subsequent search of the male’s home revealed stolen property including personal and business documents and blank cheques in other people’s names.

Investigation revealed the same male was involved in break-ins to two downtown apartments earlier this month during which more than $3,500 in property was stolen, as well as a break-in to an Essex Street business on the weekend.

A 22-year-old Guelph male is charged with four counts of break and enter, three counts of attempted break and enter, three counts of possessing identity documents, wearing a disguise while committing an offence, possessing property obtained by crime and breaching probation. He was held for a bail hearing Wednesday.
