Male Loses $700 in ‘Sextortion’ Scheme
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a Guelph male lost $700 in a so-called sextortion scheme.
An adult male called police Tuesday. He reported he had shared intimate images with an unknown person he believed to be a female via social media. The subject later demanded payment or else threatened to send the images to the male’s contacts. He sent $700 in e-transfers and prepaid gift cards.
Residents are reminded to be cautious when communicating with someone they don’t know, especially online or over the phone.
