Man Assaults Female Downtown Store Staff and Police Officers

A Guelph man faces charges after a store employee and police officer were both assaulted Thursday morning.

Approximately 11:40 a.m., Guelph Police Service officers were dealing with an unrelated matter when they heard screaming coming a business near Gordon Street and Wellington Street. A male ran from the business yelling for someone to call police.

The officers ran to the business and learned a male had entered, gone behind the counter and assaulted a female employee. Officers entered and ordered the man to the ground, but he ignored them and ran at one officer while throwing punches. He was taken to the floor and arrested.

The store employee, a female in her 60s, was transported to hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

A 38-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and assault police. He will appear in court June 21.
