Ontario’s crackdown on ticket resale pricing is already reshaping how fans buy and sell event tickets. With Ticketmaster making immediate changes and other platforms reviewing their next steps, the province’s new law is starting to impact the ticket industry in real time.
Ticketmaster has removed resale ticket listings for events in Ontario following the province’s new law that caps resale prices at face value.
The company confirmed the change was made to comply with new provincial legislation. According to a Ticketmaster spokesperson, customers will be able to relist tickets once updates to the company’s resale marketplace are completed, which is expected next week.
The change follows the passage of the province’s latest budget legislation, which includes amendments to the Ticket Sales Act. The legislation received royal assent last week, making the resale price cap effective immediately.
The new rules were introduced after complaints from consumers about tickets for major events being resold at significantly higher prices than their original value, including events such as the World Series and The Eras Tour.
A spokesperson for the Ontario government also confirmed the resale cap will apply to 2026 FIFA World Cup events in the province, with no exemptions.
Other resale platforms, including StubHub and SeatGeek, said they are reviewing the legislation and preparing to comply with the new rules.
Experts say the long-term impact of the legislation will depend on how it is enforced and how ticket resale platforms adapt their business models under the new pricing restrictions.
