A routine call on Speedvale Avenue East turned into a dangerous situation when a driver reversed into a police cruiser and sped off with two young children in the back seat. The vehicle was later found and the children were safe, but the suspect disappeared before officers could make an arrest.
The Guelph Police Service is investigating after a man rammed a police cruiser and fled with two young children in his vehicle.
Approximately 7:45 p.m. Friday police were dispatched to an address on Speedvale Avenue East for a report of a suspicious vehicle. Officers found a male sleeping in the driver’s seat with two young children strapped into car seats in the back. The man said he had driven a friend to that address and was waiting for her to come back.
While officers were conducting further investigation, the man reversed the car, striking a cruiser and causing minor damage, then fled at a high speed.
The vehicle was later located near Victoria Road North and Brant Avenue and the children were safe inside a nearby residence. The male was not located.
The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call Constable Konrad Babol at 519-824-1212, ext. 7189, email kbabol@guelphpolice.ca, leave an anonymous message for Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or leave an anonymous tip online at www.csgw.tips.
