After the elusive gold ball was not selected in Saturday’s Lotto 6/49 drawing, the next round is set to feature an unprecedented jackpot of $68 million, guaranteed to be won by someone.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced that despite the gold ball not being drawn, there were still significant wins in Ontario during Saturday’s game. A ticket from Simcoe County clinched the $5 million Classic Draw, and another from Niagara Falls secured $1 million in the Gold Ball Draw. Additionally, a $1 million Encore ticket was bought online via OLG.ca.

The absence of the gold ball in the last draw means that the upcoming Lotto 6/49 game will offer the biggest jackpot ever, and it’s a certainty that someone will claim it.

The game underwent a format change in September 2022. The primary “Classic Draw,” where participants either pick their numbers or opt for a quick pick, now has a fixed jackpot of $5 million. The Gold Ball Draw, on the other hand, offers a guaranteed $1 million prize.

OLG spokesperson Tony Bitonti elaborated on the drawing mechanism, stating, “We have 29 white balls, each signifying the guaranteed $1-million prize, and a single gold ball that represents the accumulating jackpot. If a white ball is selected, the $1 million prize is awarded, and that ball is then removed from the pool for the next draw, which also sees the jackpot increase by $2 million.”

This cycle continues until the gold ball is finally drawn. As of the upcoming Wednesday draw, only the gold ball remains in the pool, ensuring that someone will walk away with $68 million—the largest sum ever in the history of Lotto 6/49.
