Riverside Express Train Shuts Down for 2026 as Full Electrification Begins

Families who visit Riverside Park next year will notice a major change – one of the park’s most iconic rides will be missing. Behind the scenes, crews will be rebuilding the Riverside Express from the inside out, preparing it for a new electric era that reshapes how the beloved train runs for years to come.

The Riverside Express, one of the city’s most recognizable family attractions, will pause operations for the entire 2026 season as crews begin a full conversion of its aging diesel engine to a modern electric system. The upgrade marks the first major overhaul of the ride since 2000, when the current engine was installed. After twenty-five years of service, officials say the replacement is necessary to ensure reliability and to prepare the attraction for the next generation of riders.

The transition to electric power is not a simple engine swap. Specialized components, technical expertise and a lengthy fabrication process are required to adapt the new electric engine to the train’s existing frame. The goal is to preserve the nostalgic look and feel of the Riverside Express while significantly improving its performance and long-term sustainability. Once complete, the electric engine is expected to run more quietly, reduce maintenance needs and offer smoother, more consistent operation for families who have made the train a seasonal tradition.

With the work scheduled to continue through 2026, the train will not operate at any point during the upcoming season. City staff describe the decision as difficult but necessary to ensure the renovation is completed safely and properly. The upgraded Riverside Express is set to debut in 2027, bringing back a familiar ride with a refreshed and environmentally friendly core.

Although the train will be offline, Riverside Park’s carousel will continue its standard operations. Weekend service will begin in May, offering a reliable option for families visiting the park throughout the year. Updates on carousel schedules and service information will be available through the city’s website as the season approaches.
