Road Closures as U of G Students Arrive for School Year

The new school year begins next week at the University of Guelph and for approximately 5,000 undergraduate students, that means moving into residence.

Residence move-in will take place over three days, beginning on the evening of Thursday, Aug. 31 and continuing through Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2.

Each student has been assigned a move-in appointment between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on one of those days.

During this period, the following University-owned roads will be closed to all but move-in traffic:

  • South Ring Road
  • East Ring Road
  • Dundas Lane
  • Macdonald Street

Gordon Street will remain open from Stone Road to College Avenue.

Motorists should expect heavier-than-normal traffic on Stone Road, College Avenue, University Avenue, Smith Lane and Victoria Road, all near residence buildings.

To reduce traffic congestion, buses will not travel onto campus during move-in weekend. Instead, they will use the parking lot at 80 Stone Road W.

Cyclists and pedestrians on Gordon Street are strongly advised to exercise caution at major intersections, especially South Ring Road and College Avenue.

Effective traffic flow is a key priority for everyone during move-in weekend to ensure emergency personnel can respond appropriately. Anyone not required to be on campus that weekend is asked to avoid travelling to the University.

Anyone who must be on campus is encouraged to walk or cycle if able.

City of Guelph transit buses and taxis will be located at the Movati Athletic Centre parking lot (80 Stone Road W.), and GO Transit will provide stop locations on Gordon Street.

The following parking lots will be closed Friday, Sept. 1 and Saturday, Sept. 2, and all vehicles must be removed:

  • North martialing lot – P3, P19, P20, P47, P51
  • East martialing lot – P18, P16, Dundas Lane
  • South martialing lot – P31, P8, P9
  • North long-term parking – P23, P49
  • East long-term parking – P14, P15, P7
  • South long-term parking – P13
  • Student Housing staff and volunteer parking – P11
