Roommate Assaulted Within Hours of Them Living Together

A Guelph man faces charges after his new roommate was assaulted within hours of them beginning to live together.
Approximately 4 a.m. Thursday police were called to a residence in the south end. An adult male reported he came home from work at 10:30 p.m. to find a new roommate had moved in earlier in the day. It was the first time they had met.
The victim had a bottle of alcohol, which the new roommate demanded they start consuming. After a few hours of drinking together, the new roommate approached and punched him twice in the abdomen before grabbing him by the throat. The victim was able to break free and retreat to his room to call police.
Officers arrived a short time later and arrested the new roommate. A 59-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault and assault by choking. He was released with a condition he not return to the residence he had moved into just hours earlier and will appear in court February 6.
