Running out of gas led to impaired driving and drug charges for a Guelph man Monday afternoon.
Just after 2 p.m. an officer observed a vehicle which appeared to have broken down on Edinburgh Road South at Wellington Street West and parked behind it with his emergency lights activated to direct traffic.
While speaking to the driver the officer noticed he was twitching and appeared to have scattered thoughts. A roadside sobriety test was conducted and the man arrested after performing poorly.
He was transported to the police station where an officer trained in drug recognition concluded he was impaired by a drug. The man was asked to provide a blood sample for further analysis and refused to do so.
While arranging to have the vehicle towed, officers located a baggie containing suspected cocaine beside the driver’s seat.
A 28-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving, refusing to comply with a demand and possessing a controlled substance. His license was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court June 13.
