Significant Damage in Guelph Rear-End Crash Leads to Impaired Charge

A routine drive turned dangerous Thursday evening when a two-vehicle collision in Guelph led officers to uncover signs of impairment. What followed reinforces a message police continue to stress across the city: one impaired decision can carry serious consequences.

A Guelph man is charged with impaired driving following a collision Thursday evening.

Just after 6:30 p.m. police were called to Stevenson Street North near Emma Street where a driver had rear-ended another vehicle causing significant damage to both cars. They spoke to one of the drivers, who was unsteady on his feet and had slurred speech and an odour of alcohol on his breath.

He was arrested and transported to the police station, where tests confirmed he had more than the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

A 72-year-old Guelph man is charged with impaired driving and careless driving. His licence was suspended for 90 days and his vehicle was impounded for seven days. He will appear in court January 2.

The Guelph Police Service would like to encourage the public to consume alcohol and cannabis responsibly. Please don’t drive if you are going to consume alcohol or cannabis, and please ensure that you plan ahead so that you have a safe ride home. Anyone who spots a suspected impaired driver is asked to immediately call 911.
