Teachers Schooled After Field Trip Gone Awry

Two teachers got a telling-off after a field trip attracted an emergency response Thursday morning.

Approximately 11:20 a.m. police were called to the area of Yorkshire Street North and Elora Street after two witnesses reported seeing someone lifting a manhole cover and climbing inside before closing the cover.

Police and firefighters attended. As firefighters were preparing to enter the sewer system with rappelling equipment, police were approached by two teachers from a nearby high school. The teachers advised they had been participating in a class trip exploring the stormwater management system when one of the students climbed up the storm drain and opened and then closed the manhole cover.

The teachers were counselled on the potential safety and liability concerns of such an excursion.
