A Guelph man faces assault and weapons charges after a panhandler pulled a knife Monday morning.
Approximately 10:40 a.m. police were called to Willow West Mall. A man in his 60s had confronted a panhandler who previously was asking for change while holding a knife and told him to leave the area.
Instead the man pulled out a hunting-style knife, opened it and waved it at the victim while uttering threats.
The suspect fled but was located by officers and arrested a short time later. A search incident to arrest revealed the folded knife as well as a loaded pellet gun.
A 42-year-old Guelph man is charged with assault with a weapon, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and breaching a probation order. He will appear in bail court Wednesday.
