Woman Providing False Statements in Serious Assault Investigation Arrested
A Guelph woman whose false statements hampered an investigation into a serious assault last summer has been arrested.
Shortly before midnight August 11, 2023, police were called to investigate a serious assault which took place inside a motor vehicle. Investigation revealed three people were in a car when the driver was struck in the side of the head with a glass jar, causing a significant injury. He was transported by air ambulance to a trauma centre for treatment.
At the time officers interviewed a female who claimed she had been a passenger in the victim’s car when they picked up another male downtown. She told police she did not know the identity of the assailant, who had fled before police arrived.
The assailant was eventually identified and following significant investigation officers were able to confirm he and the female witness do know each other and that he had not been picked up downtown, as she claimed.
A 38-year-old Guelph woman was arrested Wednesday and is charged with obstructing police. She will appear in court March 5.
A 39-year-old Guelph man was arrested last month and is charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and obstructing police. He will appear in court later this month.
