Youths Arrested in Smash & Grab Armed Robbery at Waterloo Jewelry Store

On February 15, 2024, at approximately 8:35 p.m., police responded to reports of a jewelry store robbery in Conestoga Mall.

A group of males entered the store with hammers and a firearm and began to smash display cases and steal jewelry while making threats to staff. The males left the store and entered into a motor vehicle that was waiting for them outside.

Police quickly located the vehicle with the suspects inside while it was attempting to leave the area. The suspect vehicle failed to stop for police and hit a curb, breaking the axle and rendering it undrivable.

Five males exited the vehicle and ran away.

Members of our Canine Unit, Emergency Response Team, Direct Action Response Team, and Robbery Unit, engaged in a foot pursuit in the area of Wyman Road in Waterloo. The suspects were located in the area of Frobisher Drive by police and arrested.

As a result of the investigation, police arrested and charged five male youths. Two, aged 13 and 16, were from the Waterloo Region and three, aged 15 and 17, were from the Toronto area. The youths were charged with multiple offenses, including robbery with a firearm and possession over $5000.

The vehicle was discovered to have been stolen from Toronto in early February 2024. The motor vehicle and a loaded firearm were seized as part of the investigation.

All suspects were held in police custody for a bail hearing. There were no reports of any physical injuries during the incident.
