Auto thieves were busy in Guelph this weekend, with three cars stolen and another recovered.
On Sunday afternoon, approximately 3:50 p.m., an officer was patrolling near Victoria Road North and Eramosa Road when his cruiser’s automated licence plate reader alerted him to a stolen 2024 Mercedes AMG. The vehicle was pulled over and the driver arrested.
A 34-year-old Caledon man is charged with possessing stolen property over $5,000. He will appear in court May 20. Police are also investigating the thefts of three vehicles from Guelph.
On Friday evening, a Guelph man reported his grey 2014 Toyota Corolla stolen while visiting a friend near Willow Road and Bagot Street. A spare key was left in the vehicle.
Approximately 4:25 a.m. Saturday, a resident near York Road and Victoria Road South reported his blue 2024 Toyota Land Cruiser missing. He had been awakened by his car alarm and looked outside to find the vehicle missing. Broken glass was discovered at the scene.
At 1:25 a.m. Sunday a resident near Gordon Street and Lowes Road woke up and realized her grey 2024 Lexus RX was missing from the driveway. Neighbours’ surveillance cameras caught three men in the area attempting to enter vehicles before the stolen Lexus is seen driving away.
The Guelph Police Service encourages residents to take steps to protect themselves from auto theft. This can include parking indoors when possible or in well-lit areas, ensuring vehicle doors and windows are closed and locked, employing anti-theft devices to prevent vehicles from being started or steered and using devices to block signals from electronic keys. Please report suspicious activity around unattended vehicles, especially during overnight hours.
