The Security and Intelligence Threats to Elections (SITE) Task Force has confirmed that an information operation linked to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) sought to influence the outcome of Canada’s 45th General Election. The operation was conducted via a popular WeChat news account, Youli-Youmian (有理儿有面), and targeted Chinese-Canadian voters by promoting narratives that were favorable to the Liberal Party and its leadership.
According to the federal government, the account is tied to the CCP’s Central Political and Legal Affairs Commission and was part of a coordinated attempt to sway public opinion within diaspora communities. The campaign aimed to undermine trust in certain candidates while boosting others, using misinformation and disinformation tailored to resonate with Chinese-Canadian users.
Michael Chong, the Conservative foreign affairs critic, publicly criticized the findings, accusing Beijing of meddling in Canadian democracy to benefit the Liberal Party. He called on the government to take stronger action to defend against foreign interference and to ensure public trust in the electoral process is preserved.
This revelation has further intensified scrutiny over the vulnerability of Canada’s electoral system to foreign influence. Although the SITE Task Force has not indicated that the operation changed the outcome of the election, the findings underscore the need for ongoing vigilance and strengthened measures to protect Canadian democracy from external threats.
