A Guelph man is charged with arson after a fire was set in an apartment building lobby Tuesday morning.
Just after 5 a.m. emergency services were called to a building on Silvercreek Parkway South. Investigation revealed a man had attempted to light a rubber floor mat on fire but was not successful. He removed an air freshener from the wall, set it on fire and laid it on top of the floor mat causing it to catch.
The fire was quickly extinguished but some residents had to be briefly evacuated due to smoke.
A 22-year-old Guelph man was located in the area. He is charged with arson, failing to comply with a release order and breaching a probation order. He was held for a bail hearing Tuesday.
